Happy Cochlear Implant Processor Activation Day to Annalee

I will tell all as soon as I've finished helping Sarah get caught up with 3 days of homework.  Thanks for your prayers, patience, and continued interest.  If any of you know how I could upload the video of the activation from the video camera to facebook, please tell me.  The camera is many years old...

THANKS FOR ASKING

Every day someone asks me:   "What's new with Annalee?"  Every day I tell myself:  "You should keep that question answered with an " All-Annalee-All-The-Time-Blog." Here's what's new with Annalee since being discharged from Hershey Hospital:

1.  She has had one post-operative visit with the ear, nose, and throat surgeon who was pleased with the healing of the incision and  prescribed daily ear drops for the loosening of the packing that has been inside the implanted ear since the surgery. Annalee is complying well with the drops.

2.  Shortly after discharge from Hershey, Annalee and we attended an Individual Education Plan meeting at Susquehana High School to decide how to proceed with Annalee's education.  You will remember she has had  very poor attendance.  In hope of having a break in this long-time power struggle, we requested and were granted, a three month period of homebound instruction.  Of course, Annalee can  refuse to work with the visiting educator, but the tutor has come three times so far and  each time, Annalee has participated, albeit reluctantly.

3.  We  have not yet gotten results from the genetic testing of  the muscle biopsy.   We will meet with the geneticist early in January.

4.  Annalee is  looking forward to this coming Tuesday when we will visit the audiologist to have the cochlear implant "turned on."  This will be the beginning of the hard, hard, hard work of learning to make use and sense  sound.

5. Annalee is eating slightly more, though she remains highly selective about what she is willing to eat:  Vietnamese Pho soup & shrimp spring rolls from Spring Garden are pretty much her entire menu. Upon discharge she weighed only 61 pounds.

6.  She is somewhat less depressed and oppositional  since the surgery.  In turn, I find it somewhat easier to love and care for her.  Seeing all she suffered at the hospital gave renewed mercy.

7.  Once again, the really arduous part begins this coming Tuesday, when the cochlear implant has been activated.

I will continue to let you know What's New With Annalee.  Thanks for asking.
